Autumn

The wind is carrying a chill these days. Leaves fly and spin on the breeze and soon they will blanket the floor of our woods like a dark, damp carpet. There is a constant rustling noise in the background and the sound of the dew dropping is a higher pitch than when the leaves were green. The hummingbirds are gone, headed south for warmer climes. Clouds roll over the ridge across the road as chickadees fight over who gets to sit at the feeder.

I love autumn. This year it isn’t filling me with the dread of the oncoming winter for some reason. As I sit on the front porch, I still hear crickets. Birds are calling far up in the woods…their songs ringing down through the holler. The rain that woke me at 6:00 has created a small trickle through the creek running alongside the house…the tiny waterfalls plunking out a staccato beat. The farm cats are wandering the hillside above the house looking for a gift to present at my door. If I’m not quick enough to feed them in the mornings, they jump on the screen door to the front porch with a bang!

I’m used to the rapid drop of leaves in Colorado. Like most everything here, fall lingers…meandering it’s way through October. Time…sweet time. Nothing is rushed. I seasoned a skillet yesterday morning as I listened to classical music. I drank my coffee on the porch. I read. I wrote. I listened. I prayed…

Thank you, Lord…for your bounty.
