Almost Heaven

Red farmhouse

This picture was taken when we were “knee deep in June”, as Grandma called it. That perfect time of the year where it’s not too hot yet and the trees are all leafed out. Right now, there is just a hint of green here and there but today was the last of the really cold days, I think. The weather is supposed to really warm up in the coming days. I can’t wait to see the dogwood and redbud in bloom! Those are my favorites.

Right now there is a mattress and box springs on the front porch. I got the new one and before I good drag the old one out to the road, I had my wreck and haven’t been able to lift anything that heavy. I did take a truckload of trash to the dump yesterday but I didn’t have any rope to tie down anything that big. So, here I sit looking all the world like the Clampett’s! Hopefully I can get that out to the road next week and the trash man can take it.

I love this old farmhouse. You can feel the love in every room. During the Depression, my Grandma lived in a place where she had a tiny little stove on the landing of a staircase. This was Shangri-La to her. The only sounds come from the creek, the wall clock, and my new wind chime that resonates with deep, meditative tones….the occasional car or truck going by.

I’m getting my first stay-over company in a couple of weeks so I’m really excited about that. I love sharing the place and the stories. I remember when I came home for a visit one summer and my uncle had painted the house red. I was so upset. He had messed with my memories. Now I love the red. It has weathered to a great patina.

I remember when they built the basement, jacked the house up, and rolled it on pipes down onto the new foundation. It used to sit another forty feet or so back. That was when they had an oil well derrick in the backyard and no indoor plumbing. It was a big day when they finished the bathroom, I can tell you.

Enjoy this spring day, dear ones! ❤️

  4. What a great place it looks so peaceful. I would love to come and visit your house sometime if I’m ever driving through. It’s very inviting I can see why you enjoy it there. No need for a vacation when you live in a place like that.

    1. That is the truth! I’m sitting here with my coffee, looking out the front window, watching the birds at the feeders. So peaceful. You are welcome anytime!

  5. As I look at this picture and your surroundings a feeling of calmness and peace comes over me. I am sure that is what you feel living there away from the hustle of the city. It looks so much safer than some if the drug infested neighborhoods of the city. Would love to come visit and sit on that porch with a glass of unsweet tea and listen to nature. Peace my FB friend!

  6. Love your little red house. It looks peaceful there. I remember my grandparents house in Englewood, New Jersey. It is no longer in the family but I have so many wonderful childhood memories from summer vacations there. Would be nice to be able to go back. Enjoy your front porch and take a swing for me. ❤
