Last night was the women’s event at the mall so I had the rpod all decked out for some “Girl Camping”. The women LOVED it! I had a blast showing off the camper and visiting with some really great people.

I lived in Colorado for 40 years. Women are adventurers there and wouldn’t think twice about going camping (or anything else) on their own. I have a friend who was widowed a couple of years ago and I’ve seen her hike WAY back in the mountains alone. I did those kinds of things too after Mr. Virgo died. For me, it was either get out and do stuff, or stay home and knit.

I think, the fact that Hubby #2 was a doctor and gone from home a lot, contributed to my adventurous spirit. It wasn’t a big stretch for me to do things alone after Mr. Virgo died because he also worked long hours and was gone a lot. I missed him terribly, but not because it forced me to do things I had never done alone before.

I’m finding this is not necessarily the case with the women I’m talking to in West Virginia. It’s a little different with some southern women. When I camped in Tennessee with a group of women, the majority of them had their husbands bring their little campers to the campground, set it up for them, then come back on Sunday to take them back home.

I’m not judging. There is NO wrong way to camp like a girl. I just know from experience that I COULD learn to do something I never dreamed of doing and I found great joy and satisfaction in it. A king-sized sense of accomplishment came along with backing that 30’ camper into a narrow campsite.

Like I told the gals that have come to visit me over the last few weeks. You can camp in an Air B&B just as easily as you can camp in a camper or tent or a little minivan. The whole point is to join other likeminded women and experience that sense of community you get when you share the experience of the great outdoors.

We are counting down the days now till the drawing for this little camper. I’ll miss it when I send it on to its new owners because I sure have had a good time. It’s a great little camper. Even if I never intended to tow it and go camping, I would buy this thing to put in my back yard for a guest house or a writing studio. There are so many possible uses. And for $10 a ticket, it’s a small investment for a worthy cause.
