A Nerve Wracking Day

I was thrilled that Mr. FixIt felt much better when he woke up yesterday. I fixed him his favorite breakfast…a big steaming bowl of creamy grits and eggs. The sun was shining and it was beautiful day.

Someone I love very much was having surgery yesterday and I sat on pins and needles till I heard everything went well and they were in their room having lunch.

While I was waiting to hear about my friend, I received a phone call about someone else I love very much. They were on the way to the hospital via ambulance and it didn’t look good. Extremely high pulse, extremely low BP, chest pain, nausea and vomiting. I was scared.

I spent the day waiting to hear word and finally at the end of the day we heard the doctors were admitting them to the hospital. He was stabile and they’ll watch him overnight and do more tests today.

So, here I am…sitting here relieved and thanking God for prayers answered and praying for the future of these two loved ones. And in the meantime, Big is preparing to swim in an important meet this weekend. Her parents get to be there to watch and I get to see it on the computer.

We never know what a day will bring, do we? We have plans. We expect things to go to plan. And when things don’t go to plan, we have to remind ourselves who’s really pulling the strings here. Wasn’t it John Lennon who said life is what happens when we’re making other plans? I’ve also heard folks say we make our plans and God laughs and laughs.

The thing is, we really DON’T know. We plan and we hope but if we become too heavily invested in certain outcomes we become rigid and inflexible. Take the rained out wedding. The bride can be so heavily invested in her storybook day being perfect that she misses the chance to dance in the rain or take pictures with a rainbow.

I’m grateful for the way the day turned out.

”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.“

Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
