A Family…of Sorts

Parkersburg High School

For a class as huge as ours, my high school classmates are extraordinarily close. We have a bond seldom seen in a graduating class. I’m not sure why but classes before and after have reported they aren’t nearly as close as ours. The gals gather every month for coffee therapy and every other month or so, we have a class dinner. Then at the end of summer, we have a class picnic which is always well attended. Yesterday was our picnic and around thirty of our classmates gathered for three hours of fun. We’re starting to see more health issues, more deaths. But we are also seeing joyful achievements and the first arrivals of great grandchildren. Ok, we’re WAY too young for the great grandchildren thing….just sayin’! This particular group that gathered seem more like family, than classmates. When one hurts, we all hurt. There’s not much we wouldn’t do for each other. I love that closeness we have.

This week our high school celebrates its 100th birthday. There will be ceremonies. Our football team won on Friday. The big thing I’m looking forward to is a gathering of the Alumni A Capella Choir to sing in a concert Tuesday night. I was in choir all through high school but did not get selected for A Capella Choir…a rather elite bunch who sang beautifully.

After the class picnic and some errands, Mr. FixIt and I stopped to get a cold drink. As we left, we saw a sign…Earthstock. Our local health food store, owned and operated by one of our classmates, has had an annual customer appreciation picnic for over thirty years at a private park overlooking the river. We went and listened to some really great music and ate even MORE food. A couple errands later and we were headed back to the farm. It’s been crazy busy, and September is going to be even crazier. I’m looking forward (a little) to some slower, less frantic days. Maybe October! ❤️

  1. I will be attending my 50th (yikes!) high school reunion in September. I have kept up with so many of my classmates thanks to Facebook.

  2. Looking forward to my 50th in 2018, we had a class of 200,it seems important to get together with the ones that are still with us,lost so many with cancer

  3. No fun reunions here – went to brunch several years ago with a monthly group – hadn’t seen them in 35 yrs – no interest in me, just themselves. No thank you! All girls school, maybe that made a difference?

    1. Darn it…that doesn’t sound like fun at all. I’m sorry you didn’t get to have a good time with them. That’s what I hear On occasion. That’s why I think our class is exceptional. ❤️
