I really liked this! I live and grew up in the city of Louisville, but have many relatives living in Eastern Kentucky and love going to visit them! This describes the holler perfectly.

Great words for life. I grew up in west central Wisconsin in the coulee region of Trempleau County. Farm kids is what we were. Maybe not as mountainous as VW or KY but we lived among the ridges & valleys created by the last ice age glaciers that carved its way to the Mississippi River. Dad farm the lower valleys milking cows twice a day every year. Your comments and reminiscent of your childhood are very similar to that of ours. What a blessing and good fortune to have live during those years. Family, neighbor’s, local festivities, weddings and more. I feel sorry for those who didn’t experience that. I married a neighbor’s daughter, farm girl, we’re still on the farm. Didn’t get to far from Trempleau county but wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Great article! I grew up in WV and was trying to describe to my family (husband from OR and we live in NC) what the “head of a holler” was. This article was perfect to read to them.
