Since I found out I nearly killed my coffee grinder getting two cups of flour on Wednesday, I decided I had to have a bona fide grain mill. I’ve been researching them for at least six months. I’ve made graphs and charts and comparisons. I finally decided it had to have some specific qualifications. I wanted a manual mill in case there is a long moment in time when we might go without electricity. A manual mill is much quieter than the electric versions. Loud noises really bother me. I wanted it to have the option of adding a motor to it if cranking it becomes bothersome for me. I also wanted it to grind coarse to make grits or cornmeal as well as very fine to make pastry flour…and all the goodness in between.
I sat at the computer most of the day going down rabbit holes, trying to find one that would suit my needs. I usually use my laptop, but this time I happened to be on the desk computer which has an extension on it that scours the internet for coupons or good deals whenever you are shopping online. Lo and behold, when I pulled up the mill I settled on…I received an alert stating there were sixteen possible coupons for money off! I clicked “scan all deals” and found one that was $50 off! This was on Lehman’s Hardware in Kidron, OH. If we drove up there to buy it, I wouldn’t get that $50 off. It so happens, there was no shipping…so I saved the time and the money for gas and food. Not to mention how much more I’d be tempted to spend once I got inside that magical place! If you haven’t been there…you MUST go. It’s in the middle of Amish Country and there’s so much to see and do.
Over the past few years, I’ve made a little bit of money on my blog. So, I took what I made in the last year, plus the $50 off coupon, and my final “new money” expenditure was only $39!!! I’m excited about that! I love the taste of homemade bread with fresh milled flour. It reminds me of what food used to taste like till Big Agra hijacked our food chain. There is an adjustment in your digestion when you start eating whole grains. Theres a LOT more fiber, but there are a lot more nutrients as well. I’m hoping the mill will arrive soon…I can’t wait to try it!
We’re having a bit of a cold spell here on the homestead. I went out to the pollinator gardens in the far field this morning before the dew was off the grass. I wanted to check on the four lavender plants I planted out there this week. Nothing has touched them so far! I have one more to go in the ground and one to go to Mrs. FixIt 1.0 today. I think I might set the last plant in the fenced-in back yard. I’d love to have that lovely aroma of lavender come through the bedroom windows on a warm spring night.
I hope you have a lovely Memorial Day Weekend planned. And remember all those who served our country and gave up their lives to keep us free. It’s not about the BBQ.
Be Blessed…
Ginny

Today, I am grateful for being led to the perfect grain mill for us and for the people from whom I will learn to mill.
