The Geminid Meteor Shower

Shooting star
“The night sky holds endless fascination for me.”

”We are stardust, we are golden, we are billion year old carbon, and we got to get ourselves back to the garden…”

Crosby, Stills & Nash

I have always been fascinated by the night sky. Ever since I was a very little girl and my dad woke me up and helped me into my coat to go outside in the middle of the night. We went out to see the Northern Lights. I’ve been smitten ever since. I think that’s one reason I love to camp so much…there’s usually a clear night sky at least one of the nights in the woods.

When I was a single mom living in my first house on my own, I packed a thermos and a couple of sleeping bags in the car. I woke up Daughter #2 in the middle of the night and said, “C’mon…we’re going on an adventure.”

We drove up to the ski area, turned off the car, and spread the sleeping bags on the hood. We leaned back against the windshield and sipped our hot cocoa and watched the Persied Meteor Shower. She still talks about that to this day.

Last evening, I got a call that my wedding rings were ready to be picked up. I lost a diamond a couple of weeks ago and the service warranty covers that. I could have waited, but I’ve missed my rings, so I drove into town to get them. Afterwards, I went to the bowling alley to visit Mr. FixIt then we grabbed a bite to eat together. On the way home, we stopped to pick up a Christmas gift and some new baking pans. As we were driving out the country road home, Mr. FixIt was behind me in his truck. He called me and I said…”I SAW IT!” It looked like something out of Star Wars! Meteors were falling everywhere. BIG ones!

When we got home, I told him to park his truck and meet me in mine out in the lane that goes through the field. I turned off all the lights, rolled down the windows, and we sat there for the better part of an hour….staring at the sky.

“There’s one!”

“Wow…did you see THAT one?”

“OMGosh! This is so cool!”

God’s 4th of July…another memory made! ❤️

“and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.”

Revelation 6:13 NIV

  1. A group of SOTF/?Lemon Drop Divas are at Joshua tree watching this amazing event In California. It is now becoming an annual trip for our group. And awesome gift from camping is being able to see all the stars at night ?❤️

  2. I’m Canadian and we used to do the same thing, except we would lay down in the fields and watch the northern lights “light show” when I was little.
