There is so much to do at this time of the year. I needed to bake, but the garden needed me more. The “topsoil” we have in the raised garden has absolutely NO organic material in it. It’s just dirt. Mr. FixIt did add a layer of composted manure in the bed but then put more dirt on the top. When this kind of dirt gets wet, then dries, it turns into hard clay. I had an extra bag of garden soil that I added on top yesterday and I’ll gradually mix the two together and distribute more organic material into the dirt. I also started gathering earthworms out of the yard and put them into the garden. Once there are enough of those in there, they will aerate the soil adding castings to further enrich the raised bed. We bought big tomato plants so they are already putting tomatoes on. The Early Girl ought to be producing tomatoes in another month or so. I can’t wait…I love fresh tomato sandwiches!
I had enough of the garden soil left over that Mr. FixIt could put it around his roses. We are getting buds on a few of the bushes. My rhubarb is pushing up a whole cluster of new leaves. And the seeds Mrs. FixIt 1.0 gave me for Christmas are sprouting already. They are a kind of bean with purple pods. She calls them Jefferson Beans and her friend calls them Moon Beans.I wish I would have planted them earlier, but I think there’s still plenty of time for them to grow. They are beautiful trained up a fence.
I planted two of the lavender plants out in the far field. They say the essential oils in them deter the deer and rabbits from eating them. But I wanted to make sure before I plant all of them. I don’t want to lose any. If they aren’t safe out there, I’ll just plant them inside the fenced area around the pool.
I used up almost all of last week’s bread in French Toast yesterday morning. We have enough leftover for breakfast this morning. Then I need to head to the funeral home for visitation. I don’t think I’ll stay for the funeral. There’s so much that needs doing here. It’s supposed to rain the next couple of days, so maybe I can catch up with inside projects.
There’s always something or someone that needs fixing or fed around here! 😘

Today, I am grateful for the space to plant food and flowers…for our bodies and for our joy.
