You Never Know

You buy a desk…you need a chair, right? And not just any chair. I wanted an old banker’s chair. I found one on Facebook Marketplace. I went to pick it up Saturday. The woman I spoke with over the phone was lovely. I felt comfortable meeting her to pick up the chair.

The house was back away from the road…the quintessential farm house. White with green shutters, a long covered porch. As soon as I drove up to the house, the garage door opened and I was greeted by a middle-aged woman. I’ll call her June. June directed me to the chair and helped bring it out to the truck. We stood in the driveway and chatted for the longest time. This was her parents’ place, she told me. Her dad died in July and her mom is starting the daunting process of downsizing. I told her my heart is with her in her loss…then I told her about Mr. Virgo. Suddenly her eyes lit up and she said, OMGosh! You write a blog! You’re Marshmallow Ranch!

This always slays me when someone knows me. And I always go through a little mental inventory of my behaviors leading up to the moment of recognition. You never know who you might be talking to. I have a certain self-imposed regulation. I want to always put my best foot forward and exemplify good Christian values. It was wonderful to make June’s acquaintance.

The family dinner party was wonderful. The only mishap was forgetting to take the candied yams out of the oven to serve. The company was delightful. I cooked for three days and I was exhausted when I posted this so I’ll catch up more with you tomorrow. ❤️

“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.””
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭31:27-29‬ ‭NIV

  1. Wonderful story! It’s true, you never know. I once sold a piece of furniture to a young woman and we also had a lovely conversation in the driveway while loading it into her van…turned out she was the daughter of a good friend. Celebrating Thanksgiving early? Have beautiful holiday!

  2. Every year at Thanksgiving, I would leave something in oven or refrigerator. Finally, I started writing menu down and checked off as we put on table.

  3. I love your posts! This is a lovely story. I too forgot something last year in my crockpot. I called my neighbor who came to my house and shared with her family what I forgot!

  4. Hi, our family decided not to have Thanksgivng this year as we usually do because we are all older an exhausted from so much recent family activities, but reading your post has made me re-think what to do. Never to late to get it together, will see! Thank you Ginny, you ROCK!

  5. How cool. I have a chair like that, my dad had one and I loved it. I found mine at a Cancer thrift shop. I have found out a couple of times that someone I either just met or knew well was connected to someone else. The weirdest was right before my wedding I found out my husband was best friends with one of my cousins as we were making out some lists.

    1. I have a story like that, too. I grew up calling these friends of my grandparents…Uncle Ken and Aunt Lucy. Then whenever i started dating my first husband, he spoke of HIS Uncle Ken and Aunt Lucy. Same people! ❤️
