We’re Not in Kansas

1956 Chevy BelAir

What a crazy weather day in the south yesterday. After a relatively calm morning walk on the beach, the weather continued to amp up till the Weather Channel reported multiple tornadoes. Daytona Beach was under a tornado watch most of the afternoon. Wave after wave of severe thunderstorms drove through the area, blowing the deck furniture all over. I’m glad I got a chance to get out Monday evening and explore a little.

As I was heading south to check out New Smyrna Beach, I saw an antique car restorer and decided to stop on my way back. There were some absolutely gorgeous cars there. This particular beauty is a 1956 Chevy BelAir. Restored in a two tone with black and a striking chartreuse green, it looked so much more impressive than the black and white I remember. There was a woman who lived down the road from the farm who had one of these when I was a kid. I have always loved the ’56 and ’57 Chevys. Couldn’t you just imagine a tiny canned ham camper being towed behind one of these babies?

I went out and about again last night. I was driving through a beautiful neighborhood when I saw a sign advertising a small fiberglass camper…a Trillium. It was so sweet and small and would be perfect if it wasn’t $16.5K! Not possible. The lady selling it was lovely and we had a nice chat as she told me of her travels in the little camper. I think she was disappointed that I didn’t take it. I went grocery shopping and stopped at Starbucks on the way home. I love a decaf Americano late in the evening.

As I am writing this, the storms have passed on out to sea. I’m sitting on the deck, a lovely sea breeze rolling in over the waves. It is a sensible 73 degrees and a light sweater is plenty to keep me comfortable as I count my many blessings. I had a wonderful conversation with the powers that be at Sisters on the Fly today and I am signed up to write a monthly post on their website under the branded column they created for me…”Getting Bolder”. I took a little hiatus after the accident in February and it seems they missed me. I’m looking forward to getting back in the saddle, so to speak, and share some stories and showcase some amazing Sisters who are also Getting Bolder. It was another beautiful day! ❤️

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

  1. Glad you are enjoying your adventure, the muscle cars of the 50’s and 60’s always bring me such good memories. Envy your trip to the ocean. Enjoy.

  2. We had one of those black and white ’56 Chevys…loved those years too. AND it was a beautiful day in Kansas! Love going with you on your trips. My mom lived in Florida many years and I was “with” you in the cool of the evening. There was a small lake at her place and we enjoyed walking around it. I love Daytona win the wide beach…my last horrible sunburn was there from riding the waves! Enjoy.

  3. Boy I bet New Symana Beach has changed…I lived in Edgewater in 1952…got to go to school barefooted. We lived across from St. John’s river? I believe. My dad worked at a crab factory but hated it and couldn’t find another job! (It was a stinky place!) my parents decided to move back to Indy and every once in awhile I go down the “what if?” Highway! so many side roads in life!
