Things That Make Me Smile

These dishes! Man, do these take me back. When I lived at home, I set the table every night with these dishes for as far back as I can remember. I know the Golden Wheat pattern by Homer Laughlin came from boxes of Duz Detergent. The green pattern was also from Homer Laughlin and was called Pastoral. It came in boxes of Mother’s Oats. Mom would get gas every couple of days so she could get glasses from the service stations. And the only “china” she ever owned came from the Kroger Store. I had a set as well. I had some white teacups with a gold rim on them that came from my grandma. She saved them and kept them nice to use at her and Pop-Pop’s Golden 50th, but he passed away two months before their anniversary. I can’t remember but I might have given them to my cousin so she would have some precious family keepsakes.

Mother’s Oats

As you probably experienced in your home, it was difficult to get an entire set of dishes of one type before they went on with a new pattern, so our dinner tables were often set with a mish mosh of mismatched dishes and glasses. There were often hand-me-downs and “heirlooms” mixed it. And then, of course, there was Melmac and Melamine. Those came in handy when there were active kids in the family.

Mom bought her first real set of new dishes when she came to visit me when I lived in England. We went to market in Newbury twice a week. There were vendors there selling everything from yard goods to blood pudding. Don’t ask. It’s gross. Anyway, mom bought what I thought were the ugliest dishes ever made but she adored them. They were brown (the first strike against them) and had a bold black and white geometric pattern around the edges. I know, they don’t SOUND that bad, but trust me…they were awful. I bought a dainty rose patterned tea set. I was predictable. Mom was the maverick. She may not have had much, but she’d gladly share whatever she had.

This has been wonderful trip down memory lane this month. I guess it’s the holidays and missing loved ones that has be looking back with such fondness. I hope you’ve been enjoying taking a break from the news and the hectic hubbub that surrounds holiday celebrations. I’ll see what else I can come up with from the memory banks. ❤️

  1. I enjoyed reading about your memories
Thank you for sharing them. Your memories made me think of my own
I had a set of melamine dinner wear from H.E.B, our grocery store. They were white and lavender with Firget me not’s and violets. At one of my wedding showers I was presented with the serving prices and glasses that matched the 5 piece place setting you got free from the grocery store with a purchase of 5.00 dollars or more. This month we will celebrate our 54thAnniversery. We still have some of the pieces so maybe ill serve our dinner on them.

  2. How fun to see these! Wish you had a pic of the ugly brown ones! I love the back story which is that we didn’t live in a disposable world back then! I do picture landfills of melmac howeve!

  3. My Mom had the Golden Wheat, buying gas would get you a dinner plate, cup or saucer. Never got a full set. They bring a tear to my eye when I see them in antique stores or garage sales. Thank you for the memory.
