The Outer Banks

Outer Banks

Think “Wright Brothers”. Think “Cape Hatteras” and “lighthouses” and “sand” and “surf”. It was 86° and sunshine when I got here at 3:00. Four hours later there had been a heavy rain and it dropped down to 60°. Welcome to springtime on the Outer Banks. The complex I have the good fortune of staying in is half empty right now with only the occasional sound of children playing on the beach or in the nearby pool. In six weeks, it will be an entirely different place. This is my favorite time to travel…off season.

Unfortunately the next few days will be rainy and cool but by Wednesday it will be warm and sunny again. The rainy days are best spent doing the touristy thing and looking at monuments and shopping. Not to mention relaxing, taking naps, reading and writing.

I saw a man at breakfast this morning. He looked so familiar but I couldn’t place him. Turned out he was Frankie Faison. He’s an actor who has been in lots of television shows and movies. What a gentle and funny man he was. So gracious. He kept stopping by and adding a funny line to the last interaction. By the time he left, I was laughing hysterically at him. It’s a fun start already. I love the kind of vacation that remains largely unplanned and you never know what’s around the corner.

Oh, I saw my first alligator in the wild today! ❤️

    1. I lived in a tourist town in Colorado for 28 years. It is home to the world’s largest hot springs pool. From the time the kids get out of school till they go back, that pool is wall to wall people and town is crazy. Long lines at restaurants, no parking, traffic, and crowded sidewalks…tourists were our bread and butter but it was a great relief when they went home. ❤️

  1. Ginny I have been reading your posts and enjoying them for quite some time! I hope you enjoy the obx! I raised my family near there. I now live and work in western North Carolina.

  2. Welcome to the Outer Banks! Been here for 37 yrs. We used to have an off season but not so much anymore. It definitely gets more crowded between May and September! Enjoy your time here! Lots of beautiful things to see!!

    1. It is beautiful, Pam!!! Drove past the Cape Hatteras Ferry this afternoon and had the best fish tacos at Sanbar and Grill at Buxton! ❤️
