THE CHOIR CONCERT

A grandmother attends a middle school choir concert.

You haven’t lived till you attend your twelve-year-old granddaughter’s middle school choir concert. Seriously. Those kids were so great…funny, sweet and gawky in their awkwardness. They’re like new foals…all feet and legs and eyes. They duck their eyes and bite the inside of their cheeks in the supreme act of standing…alive…in front of…(gasp)…PEOPLE! People who are looking at them. And taking pictures of them. And um, you know, like…smiling at them and stuff. It was classic. It took me back to those years when her mama was doing the same thing. Well, not exactly the same thing. My daughter stood on a stool and “put on a show” to anyone who would sit still for five minutes. As a theater major, she lived for the spotlight. But her older daughter? Maybe not quite as much. I love her brilliant wit, her doe eyes, her modesty.

As we prepared for the concert yesterday, I was trying to decide what to wear. I had worn black corduroy leggings and a black turtle neck sweater all day. At the last minute, I just added a sparkly belt and a necklace.

I walked out of the bedroom and my nine-year-old granddaughter looked me up and down with a critical eye and said, “Nice belt. It’s real sparkly.”

“Thanks!” I said. “I just threw it and the necklace on.”

She cocked her head and said, “Well, when in doubt, add glitter!”

I love this kid. She’s not only her mother incarnate, but the little-girl me! Both girls shock me with their insight and dry sense of humor. They have left a trail of glitter on my heart. ❤️

“May the Lord bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. May you live to see your children’s children— peace be on Israel.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭128:5-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬
