Something About the Light

Hydrangea

There’s something special about the evening light of June in West Virginia. It takes on the soft green of the abundant foliage and spreads it through the air molecules…or, so it seems. As I sat on the porch Thursday evening, eating a late supper of salad with baked chicken, I couldn’t help but jump up and snap this shot of what Grandma called her snowball bush. I seem to remember the clumps of flowers being more rounded than this when I was a child. Do you suppose the plant has changed over the years and morphed into what we see here? It’s possible. Or, more likely, my memory has.

It’s been quite cool here the last week. I even turned the furnace on the other evening. Once I start wearing shorts and flip-flops, it’s hard to go back so I suffer through it with frozen feet. It’s funny how 52° feels balmy in February but frigid in June. It’s all a matter of perspective, isn’t it?

The new gas heater is installed and it occurred to me this morning as I was admiring the handy work…this stove doesn’t have a thermostat on it, just Off, Low, and High. I wish I would have noticed that before but it’s too late now. I’ll just have to leave it on low in the winter months. It’ll heat the bathroom and that end of the house just fine. Thank goodness this farm has free gas…one of the few perks to having gas wells on your property.

I’m on an overnight road trip. I needed to come see my family before I head to Colorado in a few weeks. I love my Uncle Bud. He taught me to weld when I was ten years old. He knows how to do everything and I always learn so much from him. I’ll deliver my aunt’s mail to her. Not much still comes to the farm. They asked me to bring Grandma’s Bible but I think my mom had it and it’s in my stuff that’s in storage. I’ll have to bring it another time.

I hope you all are having a great weekend! ❤️

  1. I love those words about the light … ” It takes on the soft green of the abundant foliage and spreads it through the air molecules ”
