Road Trip: Day Twenty-Five…”Life is Better at the Ranch”

Life is Better at the Ranch

The trip out west is winding down. The kids are busy with camps and getting ready for school so there isn’t as much time for visiting. I could spend another month showing Mr. FixIt around Colorado, but there are things that need tending to back home. I was going to stay till the end of August so I could attend a Sisters on the Fly event. However, I am hosting a Sisters event in WV the first week of September and there are still so many details to take care of and I want it to be memorable for the gals. So, I’m heading back east this weekend. I’m not going to put Mr. FixIt on the plane…he’s going to drive back with me. We have found an alternate route that will take us along the America River on a two lane and off the wicked roar of the interstate. I’m looking forward to an easier ride home with good company.

Our last days here will consist of family time and perhaps a drive to Colorado Springs to the Garden of the Gods and Pike’s Peak. Yesterday was laundry day (I ironed a shirt! gasp!), lunch out with my son-in-law’s parents, a little nap in the afternoon, dinner with the family, and a trip to my favorite antique store. The Brass Armadillo is huge and would take a full day to browse. We only had a couple of hours but we did our best to see as much as possible. It floors me to go into an “antique” store and see the things we grew up using and playing with. I mean, really…antiques? How is that possible when we keep getting younger?

I loved the Ranch sign. And the angel wings were awesome. The trailer with wings was adorable. I didn’t buy a thing, although there were so many things I could see owning. I can’t shop anymore without envisioning the work involved with downsizing when I sold my house and got rid of 95% of my personal belongings. It was so incredibly difficult and I don’t ever want to do that again. I already own too much stuff! I want to keep my life light and not be burdened by the weight of possessions. I love stuff. I love that my friends dig their stuff and want to keep it around them. I totally get that. It’s going to be interesting to see how things unfold as my relationship with Mr. FixIt moves forward. Ohhhh, he’s as big a pack rat as I am!

Today’s a day of helping my daughter while Mr. FixIt entertains himself. He can find his way around Denver with the GPS. I hope you all have an incredible day! ❤️

  1. I will have to check out that shop next month when I’m in Denver, but I feel the same way about acquiring more stuff! I have downsized twice in the past 5 years and still trying to pair things down. I plan to visit Garden of the Gods as well. Wishing you and Mr. Fixit a safe trip back home ❤️

  2. Smart to downsize before being ‘forced’ to. What’s crazy to me is that people fill storage units with things and aren’t even using them, yet people around the world may not even have clothes on their back. I have a friend who visits India often and in some rural areas, some people are actually naked, they have absolutely nothing.

    1. Wow…yes, our hyperconsumerism is bothersome to me. I’m at the mall right now and I pick stuff up and put it right down. I just don’t need anything. I did buy some nicely flavored balsamic vinegars. ❤️

  3. I am glad you have had a good time in your old stomping grounds and that you had someone to share it with. It will be nice to have a copilot on your way home. Hope to see you next summer.

  4. Ginny, could you do a post sometime on the ins and outs of downsizing? The obvious parts are, well, obvious….but I can’t seem to get started. Hubby decreed “No yard sales at the house”–for my safety–but other than a car, some tools and car parts, I’ve not been able to tackle the rest. (the rest of his Mr Fix-it tools, yard tools, car stuff, hobby accumulations, etc.
I think hearing how others do it would help. (I have no family nearby to help)
    thanks!
